Open Water Swimming

TSE hope to resume OWS Sessions at Lakeside for members mid-to-late April (temperature permitting) and in advance of this, you are advised that:

Sessions are for paid-up full members only.

  1. You must be able to swim front crawl continously for 1,000m - slow if neccesary.
  2. Your tetanus jabs must be up-to-date.
  3. Wetsuit induction sessions (for full members) are planned on 29th March and 12th April at OLC. These will last for 30 mins and are compsulsory to those new to OWS. Experienced OWS'ers with new wetsuits may use these sessions to try out them out but respect the needs of newcomers.
  4. Once acclimatized to wearing a wetsuit, you will then attend a compulsory induction swim (earlier start at Lakeside) with one of our coaches before you are allowed to swim or join the main groups.
  5. The swim groups are graded on ability and you will be put into an appropriate group.
  6. A limited number of ladies small club wetsuits available to borrow and you are welcome to borrow one although it may not be possible for you use this at every week. If demand is high they may be used on a session or half-session rota. We hope to purchase some men's suits this summer to borrow, but none are presently available.
  7. The Lake owner may ask us all to sign a waiver.
  8. You are expected to take 2 turns in the saftey canoe during the OWS season - please sign the rota when you attend Lakeside
  9. Youths who are 15 as at 31.12.09 will be invited by invitation and Les will write to you in this regard.

Some points about our OWS sessions:

  • Lakeside is a fantastic facility and we’re certain that you will all really enjoy open water swimming once you become familiar with it, but it is very different from pool swimming.
  •  The club has excellent safety procedures in place, you will always be swimming with others and have a safety canoe nearby, and furthermore you will never be more than 20 metres from the side of the lake.
  • A safety briefing is read out before each swim and you must listen to this carefully. The above points have to be adhered to for your own, and other people’s safety.
  • In the next few weeks we will begin practicing open water drills during our OLC sessions which will help you develop new techniques.

After OWS sessions we have a coffee/cake in Costa Coffee - not to be missed!

Spinning Classes - Ongar Leisure Centre from 7.30pm in the Spinning Studio on the first floor.  Coached session with Kevin Partridge.  Improves hill climbing, balance, speed and general bike fitness.  All members who took part last season noticed improvements in their bike performance.

Splinter Group Ride - Following the inaugural TSE Brentwood splinter group ride, we are pleased to announce dates for the next few months below. These rides are geared towards ladies & improvers* and will circle Brentwood and Billericay, where many of you live.  The Ongar rides on the first Sunday of each month will continue with the Brentwood splinter group ride running as variety!  Please make a diary note of the following Sundays: 11th January, 1st and 15th March, 12th April, 24th May, 14th June and 19th July.  These will be TSE sanctioned rides lead by our BTF Coaches.  The ride will be a structured session and include warm up, skills, main fitness and warm down elements.  Coaches at the head and tail of the group will ensure no-one is left behind!

The course is 28 miles, undulating, quiet, but never too far from town and encapsulates parts of the Herongate 10k course, Striders 10k course and Shaftesbury’s TT circuit.  “Bail out” areas will allow a shorter return ride home.

There is No need to book - just turn up on the day.  The group for this ride, meet at Herongate cycles at 8:50am to register. The ride will last a couple of hours and will finish in Herongate or better still, Thorndon South CP Café for breakfast!  Please ensure you bring a full water bottle/sport drink, puncture spares and of course, your crash helmet. Conditions may vary during the ride - so dress accordingly. If conditions appear dangerous i.e. ice, snow or fog, the ride will be cancelled. Please do not bring MP3 players.
