Celebrating 22 Golden Years of Success!

What Is a triathlon?

In short a triathlon is an endurance event that consists of 3 disciplines, Swimming, Cycling and Running.  There are various distances, but the most commonly recognised would be the Ironman, Half Ironman, Olympic and Sprint distances.   There are also other associated events such as Duathlons, Aquathlons & Team Events.

Ironman  - The longest distance for a single event which consists of a 2.4 mile swim (3.86km), a 112 mile bike ride (180.2 km) and a 26.2 mile (42.195 km) run.

Olympic - One of the most popular events.  This event consists of a 1500m swim (0.93miles), a 40k bike ride (24.8 miles) and a 10k run (6.2 miles).

Sprint - The shortest distance for this event and can vary in the overall discipline distances, but the most common is 750m (approx 1/2 mile) swim, 20k (12.5 mile) bike ride and a 5k (3 mile) run.

Duathlon - An event that involves a Bike ride followed by a run, the distances can vary from event to event, but a standard distance might be 10k (6 miles) Run, followed by a 40k (25 miles) Bike and then another shorter run, 5k (3 miles)

Aquathlon - A Swim Run event. Again the distances vary, but a standard distance for this event would be 750m (1/2 mile) Swim and a 5k (3 mile) Run.

Team Events - You can compete in a variety of the above events in a team, you will come across this type of event throughout the Club and National race season.  Placings are normally calculated on your individual placing within an actual individual event.  The winning team will be the one with the required number of club competitors with the fastest overall joint finish times.   Annually, the Triathlon Federation for England organises the National Relay Championships and this event is usually run from Pierre Point, Nottingham.  The event consists of Teams of four Athletes.  Every team member swims in an open water swim and tags the next member of their team who then completes the swim.  The last team member to finish the swim then relays with the first cyclist, then each team member completes the cycle as they are tagged, then the run.  Tri Sport Epping has been quite successful at this particular event at the Natioanal Championships over the last few years, the event is good fun and an excellent for spectators too!
